Translation woes continues as monsters have to have their silly names.

So, there is this neat, nasty fire dragon in Atelier Marie (apparently he appears in some later Atelier titles as well). The name of this great nemesis is…

フラン プファイル

So… as of this moment, this thing will be called “Fran Pfaile” (sine Pufailu just sounds silly).

If there are any Atelier game nuts out there who knows another widely acknowledged or even official english way to write his name, do speak up and right my wrongs.

So, still translating. This game is full of weird animal and item names. Some of them I remember from playing Atelier Iris or such, and that makes it easier to find an acceptable romanisation of the names. Others are… just weird.

I’m no Japanese expert, so there might be things there that I am missing, too. But I keep learning. And hopefully the translation won’t be too painful!

One thing I came across is this:

キュクロスバチ

This is a type of bee. After staring at the word for a while, I did some digging around to try and find out if there is some hidden meaning in there, or if I should just go with a romanization of the word.

I found out that “キュクロス” is apparently a way to write the word Cycle (or the Greek Kyklos).

バチ could be a punishment or a curse.

… so far so good? Though I’m still puzzled as to what to call the bee. It could be something like the “Cycle Curse Bee” or just “Kyklospachi Bee”.

I’m stumped. Anyone have a better suggestion? Or maybe someone with great insight can tell me that I am completely off track and give the actual, obvious translation?

Oh well, nothing to do but keep chugging along.

It’s been a long while since my last post, so I thought it might be time to update.

There is not a lot to update about though – I’m still working on the script, although things are going a bit slowly right now. Translation speed goes up and down ^^; Having some problems with context since I can’t always remember what situation a certain line was used in, but hope to be able to catch these likely mistakes when I see the text in the game sometime. Until then I will keep chipping away at the script.

So yeah. Just wanted to let you know that the project and I are still alive :)

So, I finally got back! And don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about this project. It will probably take a couple of days for me to get back into the swing of things, but then I’ll pick up the translating where I left off.

On September 25th I will be leaving the country for 9 weeks to work and study abroad – that means that it is unlikely that I will be able to translate much during that time, and probably won’t be able to answer all comments and questions either.

Don’t worry though – work will continue the moment I get back.

Morganite at the Reyvateil’s Melody forum has lend a hand at hacking Marie Atelier Plus. So far the script has been extracted for me, and he is now working on fixing the space problem among other things. I myself am now able to properly begin translating.

Now for the most important part – I badly need programmers/hackers who can help me extract/re-insert the script and generally make the technical part of this project happen. I’m only the translator, and although I’m tinkering with the game and trying to find out some things on my own, it is pretty much a lost battle at this stage.

So if you come across this page or one of my other help-seeking posts, and if you know a bit about working with translation-hacks for PSX games (or maybe even PS2 games) then drop a message and let me know!
