The woes of translation and bees
July 31, 2010
So, still translating. This game is full of weird animal and item names. Some of them I remember from playing Atelier Iris or such, and that makes it easier to find an acceptable romanisation of the names. Others are… just weird.
I’m no Japanese expert, so there might be things there that I am missing, too. But I keep learning. And hopefully the translation won’t be too painful!
One thing I came across is this:
キュクロスバチ
This is a type of bee. After staring at the word for a while, I did some digging around to try and find out if there is some hidden meaning in there, or if I should just go with a romanization of the word.
I found out that “キュクロス” is apparently a way to write the word Cycle (or the Greek Kyklos).
バチ could be a punishment or a curse.
… so far so good? Though I’m still puzzled as to what to call the bee. It could be something like the “Cycle Curse Bee” or just “Kyklospachi Bee”.
I’m stumped. Anyone have a better suggestion? Or maybe someone with great insight can tell me that I am completely off track and give the actual, obvious translation?
Oh well, nothing to do but keep chugging along.

Hello, I can’t translate japanese but the translators don’t translate this expression… Moreover, when I search with google, I almost find atelier viorate pages only and yeah there is a connection with kind of bees (existing in the games only I think). I saw that with a picture, but below this picture the only expression untranslated is this one.
If a perfect tranlation is necessary, we must hope that a good translator go here.
Good luck ^^

I think in a translation, everything should be translated and not just romanized, so it should be “Cycle Curse Bee” even if it doesn’t sound too good.

I’m unfortunately unable to translate at all, though “Cycle Curse Bee” would be fine to use if that’s a literal translation.
I have put out a call on my blog asking that if any of my readers can help the project at all that they drop in and help out. And I’m still wishing you luck from the sidelines!

You’re very welcome! I’m really hoping I can get the word out to someone who can help!
I’m the one who should be thanking you for getting this project underway and doing all this work on it!

Well, for now the thing has been christened “Cyclic Curse Bee”. Guess that works.

Maybe it’s “Kyklos Curse” (Cycle Curse)? Did the name of the enemy say ‘bee’ anywhere in it? I mean, it may be a bit literal, but if the enemy clearly looks like a bee, then maybe the word ‘bee’ doesn’t need to be in the name. Just throwing suggestions out there.
Also; If you would like any assistance at all with the translation, I would be glad to help. I’m currently working on translating an Atelier Marie guide, so I’ve got a bit of a grasp on some of the stuff.

Sorry, the notification of the last two comments to this had ended up in my spam folder, so I didn’t see them >_<
But sure, if you feel up to it then I wouldn't mind you helping out. Do you want to do checking or translate some script snippets? Just write me a mail:

I realise this is a late comment, but ‘bachi’ is just ‘bee’; some words in Japanese change pronunciation depending on preceding words.
The name I’d go with is ‘Kyklos Bee’.

Well that’s great – I considered just calling it Kyklos Bee for a while because it just sounded better, and then that turns out to be the real meaning too ^^; Thanks!
