Dragons and their crazy names…

November 4, 2010

Translation woes continues as monsters have to have their silly names.

So, there is this neat, nasty fire dragon in Atelier Marie (apparently he appears in some later Atelier titles as well). The name of this great nemesis is…

フラン プファイル

So… as of this moment, this thing will be called “Fran Pfaile” (sine Pufailu just sounds silly).

If there are any Atelier game nuts out there who knows another widely acknowledged or even official english way to write his name, do speak up and right my wrongs.

Blah. I ran into this same problem while translating the online guide. Still haven’t quite figured it out. Through research, I discovered that he was in Iris 2, but when I went to go look at the translated name, it was… nothing like the original. (NISA gave up, then? xD)I came up with something similar to what you had, but it was Flan Pfail, which just looks like Flan Fail, sooo, not gonna go with that. This one might take some work, I’m afraid. .__.

Haha yes, I added the “e” at the end to try and give it some french sorta pronunciation. I’m still not sure it doesn’t sound like “Fail” though :P

So they gave up on the name? xD No wonder. Sometimes I wonder if they come up with these names just by adding random sounds together!

(Still Peaches. Just on my actual WordPress account, rather than not.)

If you do decide to go with Flame Virum, be sure to let me know. I think it’d be nice if our translations (between you with the game, and me with the online guide) matched. :D

Also, I’ll be sure to help out with more translation stuff, hopefully starting again next week. I’ve been away from home, and forgot to bring the files you sent me. :(

As Peaches says, the name is completly different but i think that the AI2′s name is more appropriate. The name is “Flame Virum”. It’s you who decides the name.

  3. Sono Says:

Walkthroughs and things I’ve seen have called him “Flamphile”?

I don’t remember if he came up in the manga at all, so it may just be a walkthrough that I saw that in. But that’s what me and my group all call him.

  4. Epi Says:

I guess Flame Virum would be better for those who have played Iris. But you’re going to kill it anyways, so that name is cool too.

Nice to see the translation is still ongoing. I’ve been following it for a while now.

  5. Raven Says:

Just read about the translation project, hope I could read moonspeak but, well. Keep up the good work!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

By the way, I checked some guides for various other Atelier games, and I found a dragon named “Fran Pfeil” in Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland. It also appears as such in Atelier Iris 3

  8. pakopako Says:

    Fran Pfeil?

    Shouldn’t it be FRAN PUFFER?
Yes, I am taking extreme liberties here, especially to me it sounds like an aberration of “Friend Profile” or “Fran Poof Fire”

How’s the translation going? I’m all in favour of this project (eeeeeeee early Atelier games eeeeeee) so if you need an editor or proofreader do drop me a line. :D

  10. Master of Bones Says:

Hi. Is the project still going on?

  11. Epi Says:

Hello, just checking as always. Hope the project still is ongoing. Just bought the Atelier Rorna Premium ED on ebay. Lesson learned: Always buy NISA games as soon as they’re out. Man what a pain that was….

  12. Vatina Says:

I have an awful tendency to see replies to my blog, mentally take note of what to answer, and then… well, never actually *doing* it.

But to answer the question – yes, the project is still alive. It is currently not my highest priority and a lot is going on, so I’m afraid you won’t see any results from me in quite a loong time. Work happens mostly in intervals when I suddenly get a lot of free time for it, and I can’t always predict when these will come.

But as long as no one pries it out of my hands and convinces me that they can do it better and faster, I’ll keep it active. Sorry to those who have to wait so long.
